Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Section 2 Answers

2) Games were mentioned six time throughout the section first, was the beheading contest between the green knight and Gawain. Second, before Gawain leaves for his journey, the people mention how it was a shame that Gawain had to die because of Christmas games. Third, Gawain says that traveling to find the green knight was no game because of how difficult and lonely it was. Fourth, the lord of the castle started a game where everybody had to fight him in order to take his hood. Fifth, when Gawain was talking to an attractive woman he said that their conversation was better than the other lord’s sports which are games. Sixth, the lord wanted to issue a bargain, which is a form of a game, where whatever he wins while hunting will be Gawain’s and whatever Gawain wins at the castle will be the lords. Seventh, the lord reassured Gawain that he knew how to draw out game, or animals for hunting.
3) The symbol of the pentangle helps to reinforce the theme of chivalry. Because the pentangle represents the principles a knight must live by which are generosity, good fellowship, cleanness, courtesy, and compassion.
4) There are two different settings in the second section. The first is the wilderness of whales which is traversed by Gawain during the winter, Gawain describes it as cold, lonely, dark, and filled with many foes. The second is a large castle in a clearing of the woods Gawain said that it was the most beautiful castle that he had ever seen with a tall spiked palisade and large draw bridge. The people of the castle were honored to have a knight like Gawain, everyone was also very nice and well behaved.
